Dust or debris blocking speaker mesh
Clean the speaker grille
Repair Steps
1. Locate the speaker grille, typically found on the bottom edge of the phone near the USB-C port, and inspect it closely under bright light for visible lint, dust, or pocket debris clogging the small mesh holes. 2. Use a soft-bristled brush (such as a clean, dry toothbrush) to gently sweep across the grille holes in one direction to dislodge surface debris without pushing it deeper inside. 3. Use a can of compressed air held about 2-3 inches away at a slight angle, giving short 1-2 second bursts directed into the grille to blow out trapped particles. 4. For stubborn debris, apply a small piece of low-tack tape (such as painter's tape) to the grille surface and gently press and peel to lift out particles stuck in the mesh without leaving residue. 5. Play a test audio clip or call a test number at moderate-to-high volume and listen closely for continued rattling, muffling, or distortion. 6. If sound is still muffled, use a sewing needle or thin sim-eject pin very gently and shallowly (only a few millimeters) to clear individual holes in the mesh, being extremely careful not to puncture the speaker diaphragm just behind it. 7. Re-test audio playback at various volumes (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) to check if distortion appears only at high volume, which would suggest a different underlying cause such as diaphragm damage rather than blockage. 8. If the sound is now clear and full across all volume levels, the cleaning has resolved the issue; advise the customer to avoid keeping the phone in pockets with lint-heavy fabric or sand-prone environments without a protective case.
Water damage or blown speaker diaphragm
Replace speaker module
Repair Steps
1. Ask about recent history of moisture exposure (rain, spills, humidity) or high-volume/bass-heavy audio use, as either can rupture or degrade the speaker diaphragm. 2. Power off the phone and remove the SIM tray. 3. If water damage is suspected, first check for triggered water-damage indicator stickers (usually located in the SIM tray slot or under the back cover) which turn red/pink upon moisture contact. 4. Heat and remove the back panel using a heat gun and opening tools as described in prior device teardown steps, working slowly around the perimeter. 5. Disconnect the battery connector immediately for safety, especially critical if any moisture damage is suspected. 6. Locate the speaker module, typically a small rectangular unit near the bottom edge of the phone, connected via a small flex ribbon or spring-loaded contacts to the motherboard. 7. If water damage is present, use isopropyl alcohol (99%) and a soft brush to gently clean visible corrosion on the speaker contacts and surrounding motherboard area, then allow to fully air dry for at least 30 minutes before proceeding. 8. Remove the screws or adhesive securing the speaker module to the frame, then disconnect its flex cable or lift it away from its spring contacts. 9. Inspect the removed speaker's diaphragm (the thin cone/membrane) for visible tears, warping, or a whitish residue (mineral deposits from water), any of which confirms it needs replacement rather than cleaning. 10. Install the new speaker module in the exact same position and orientation, reconnecting its flex cable or aligning its spring contacts precisely with the motherboard pads. 11. Secure the module with the original screws or fresh adhesive as applicable. 12. Reconnect the battery and power on the phone with the back panel still open to test audio playback at multiple volumes, confirming clear sound with no rattling or distortion. 13. Once confirmed working, reseal the back panel with fresh adhesive and reinstall the SIM tray, then perform one final audio test (music, call, and notification sound) to confirm consistent quality.
