charging-port-not-working Guide

Comprehensive diagnostic and repair walkthrough.

Tecno Camon 20

The Cause

Lint or debris in charging port

The Solution

Clean the charging port

Repair Steps

1. Power off the phone completely to avoid short-circuiting the port while cleaning. 2. Use a bright flashlight or phone light (from another device) to look directly into the USB-C port for visible lint, dust, or debris. 3. Take a wooden or plastic toothpick (never metal, to avoid shorting the pins) and gently insert it into the port, scraping lightly along the bottom and sides where the metal pins sit. 4. Blow into the port firmly or use a can of compressed air held at a slight angle to dislodge loosened debris without pushing it further in. 5. If debris is compacted, dip the toothpick tip lightly in isopropyl alcohol (do not soak it) and gently swab the interior pins, being careful not to bend the small internal springs/contacts. 6. Allow the port to air-dry for at least 5 minutes if alcohol was used, ensuring no moisture remains before powering on. 7. Test with the original charging cable, inserting it fully and checking for the charging icon/animation on screen. 8. Wiggle the cable gently while connected to check for intermittent connection, which would suggest the debris wasn't fully cleared or there's a separate connector issue. 9. If charging is now stable and consistent across multiple plug-in attempts, the repair is complete; advise the customer to use a port cover or case with a flap in dusty environments to prevent recurrence.

The Cause

Worn out or damaged charging port connector

The Solution

Replace charging port flex/module

Repair Steps

1. Power off the device and remove the SIM tray. 2. Heat the rear panel edges (if the charging port module is accessed from the back) or the screen edges (if accessed from the front, depending on Camon 20's internal layout) using a heat gun at low-medium setting for even softening of the adhesive. 3. Pry open the panel carefully with a plastic opening tool, working slowly around the perimeter to avoid snapping any hidden clips or ribbon cables near the edges. 4. Disconnect the battery connector first to prevent short circuits while working near the charging circuitry. 5. Locate the charging port flex cable, typically a small board near the bottom edge of the phone connected via a ribbon or soldered directly depending on the model's design. 6. If it's a ribbon-connector type, unlock the connector clip with a spudger and gently lift the flex cable free; if it's soldered, this repair requires desoldering with a hot air rework station, which is a more advanced procedure requiring flux, solder wick, and precise temperature control (around 300-320°C for typical SMD components). 7. Clean the motherboard pads thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and a brush after removing the old port to ensure good contact/adhesion for the new part. 8. Position the new charging port flex/module in the exact same orientation, securing any adhesive backing or screws that hold it to the frame. 9. Reconnect the ribbon to its connector (or solder the new module in place with fresh solder paste if it was a soldered type), then reconnect the battery. 10. Power on the phone before fully resealing and test charging with the original cable, checking for a stable charging icon and confirming in Settings > Battery that charging current is being reported normally. 11. Also test data transfer via the same port using a PC connection, since a bad port can affect both power and data pins. 12. Once confirmed working, reseal the panel with fresh adhesive and reinstall the SIM tray.
